Ayr on a pizza

Saturday night and we are in Ayr which looks as pretty as next door Prestwick looks horrible. A fine spacious seaside town we easily find the gig ‘Su Casa’ but are told by Jamie who is organising it that we are playing at the Fire House instead. He seems a bit jumpy and when we roll up at the Fire House at 7 it is obvious why – no .one has a clue we’re coming, still its a nice place and we settle down to a very good wood fired pizza. At 9 the organisers Carol and Mark arrive and they dont know us from Adam. However they are very welcoming and explain its an open mic night and suggest we go on first.. The joint fills up with a jolly good homoured crowd although none of them seem to have instruments.

We play our first set to wild applause at 9.30 and then half the people in the place egged on by Carol get up grab Mark’s guitar (he is a guitar builder www.baileyguitars.co.uk)  and sing 3 songs. Anything from ‘Anarchy in the UK’ to ‘I’ve got my mojo working’, gypsy jazz to singer songwriters, its wild and all the time Carol is setting up mic stands, glad handing thepunters, egging on the performers, singing backing vocals, and steering various inebriated patrons to their seats. By 12 the joint is rocking and we play a second set accompanied by bazooki, boran, Mikes guitar and Carols voice! All in all a very entertaining evening although apart from the CD sales a little short on wages. Back to the B&B via Pirate Petes

  1. Enjoyed your sets, added something different to the evening, surprised there was no mention of the silly hats. Good luck with the rest of your tour and if your ever back in Ayr, you will receive a warm welcome at the Firehouse.
